Antonis Zannikos from Vrontados on the seafaring island of Chios, former president of the Chios Chamber of Commerce and Industry and a descendant of a prominent maritime family, speaks on “Fair Winds and Following Seas” on Voice of Greece.
He discusses Greek shipping and the many benefits of pursuing a career in the industry.
“Shipping in Greece continues to evolve and will always move forward. Young people must therefore be highly trained and ready to face the challenges of the future, such as artificial intelligence and new navigation systems and regulations,” Zannikos says.
He also expresses his concerns and dissatisfaction with maritime education in Greece: “Maritime education in our country is problematic. It bears no comparison with Norway’s system. Merchant Marine Academies remain classified as academies and, despite offering four-year programs, their qualifications are not equivalent to those awarded by universities. Young people who want to pursue a career at sea should believe in themselves and follow this path, while parents should encourage and prepare them from an early age.”
