On this episode of “Voices and Music,” we welcomed distinguished dramatic soprano Taxiarchoula Kanati to the studio for an extended, thoughtful conversation marked by her warmth and elegance.
We discussed her early years in Salamina, her pivotal encounter with Ioannis Modinos at the age of 13, her studies at the State Conservatory of Thessaloniki and the State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart, and her vocal transition from mezzo-soprano to dramatic soprano.
Taxiarchoula Kanati shared her experiences of performing at Stuttgart State Opera and the Salzburg Festival, under conductor Teodor Currentzis and director Romeo Castellucci, as well as her debut in Wagnerian roles at the Greek National Opera.
She also spoke in depth about her new project, “The Secret Invitation,” with arrangements by Stefan Schreiber—an existential dialogue between the poetry of Mackay, Cavafy, and Blok and the music of Strauss, Reger, and Schoenberg. She discussed her upcoming performances of works by Strauss and Mahler, along with her debut in Croatia as Elettra in Mozart’s “Idomeneo,” and sent her warmest wishes to Greeks around the world.
