“Fair Winds and Following Seas: Saturday shift” with three Greek painters | 21.10.2023, 20.00

Three Greek painters, Yiannis Adamakis, Elena Papadimitriou and Anna Maria Papadimitriou are guests on Saturday, October 21st, 2023, at 8:00 am Greek time (and on replay at 11 pm) on Voice of Greece and the Saturday special edition of the show “Fair Winds and Following Seas” curated and presented by Antonis Karagiannakis.

The three distinguished Greek artists participate in the group painting exhibition entitled “Attending the Deep Sea” that takes place, these days and until the end of October, in Fira, Santorini. They talk about their relationship with the sea, the sailors who travel on it and the people who live by it, about the endless blue and magic of the sea, its seabed with its pebbles, ships, waves, and ports.

Yiannis Adamakis was the child of a marine merchant, as was Elena Papadimitriou whose father was in the Hellenic Navy. They describe their feelings when father came home and then went away again on the next sea trip. Unforgettable childhood memories with strong emotions. “There is a special beauty and peculiarity in painting the sea and the ships watching them pass by the land, because they too have a soul”, says Yiannis Adamakis. “My father loved the sea very much, more than the mountain where he came from and passed this love on to me. For me, the sea is an inspiration and the essence of living itself, which I adore and that’s why I became an islander”, says Elena Papadimitriou.

Lastly, the painter and curator of the exhibition, Anna Maria Papadimitriou, tells us that “The sea is not only love but also a search. It is a connection to life but also to death. It’s a meditative experience that only water can create.”

Manolis Lampridis on “Saturday Watch” | 24 May 2025, 08:00
Author Manolis Lampridis takes us on a voyage through time with his novel The Brave Men of Kasos: The Howl from the Ship’s Rail — a lyrical narrative set in 1732, on the eve of revolution, in Kasos, the storied island of the southeast Aegean with its proud seafaring tradition. Through richly drawn characters — captains, sailors, master shipwrights, village elders, pirates, saints, and folk heroines like Zantana — the book brings to life a world where history and myth converge. The people of Kasos gave everything they had, including their ships, to the Greek War of Independence, only to ... Read more
