Historical Walks: George Bougelekas about the history of the ‘Mataroa’ | 13 July 2024

It was July 14, 1945. the anniversary of the French Revolution was celebrated in Athens. Thousands of people gathered, among other things, to welcome France’s decision to remain neutral regarding the clashes of Dekemvriana in Athens. A few months later the French state decided to give scholarships to hundreds of young Greeks to study in Paris. Some returned, some stayed. Their achievements infuenced the intellectual and artistic developments of postwar Europe and shaped Western thought up to this day.

On Saturday 13 July 2024, at 13:00 Athens time, the show “Historical Walks” on Voice of Greece will host George Bougelekas, author of the historical novel “The Return of Mataroa”, who will talk to us about the first Greek scholars who went to France on the ship “Mataroa” after World War II.
