“Our Town” tribute to Rebetiko Part I: Markos Vamvakaris & Giannis Papaioannou | 19 Oct. 2024, 12:00

Radio portraits of creators of rebetiko music will be presented in the program “Our Town” on Saturday, October 19, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM (Athens time) and on Monday, October 21, from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

In the first part of the tribute, portraits of significant creators Markos Vamvakaris and Giannis Papaioannou will be showcased.

In the studio, musician and performer Manolis Dimitrianakis will share many unique stories he experienced while playing bouzouki alongside top artists like Pagoumtsis, Bagaiandras, Roukounas, and others. He will make a special reference to the patriarch of rebetiko, Markos Vamvakaris, as he studied under him for two years.

Particular stories will also be heard about the important foundational figure of popular music, Giannis Papaioannou. There will also be a mention of the band “Rebetiki Kompania,” which he formed in 1972 with the Kontogiannis brothers, playing a significant role in the revival of the genre.

Also in the studio is musician and radio producer Elena Falirea, who will talk about rebetiko today and accompany Dimitrianakis on guitar for songs that will be performed live for the listeners of Voice of Greece.

Repeat of the program: Sunday, October 20, from 4:00 AM to 5:00 AM.
