“Saturday Shift”: The Japanese captain who saved hundreds of Greeks and Armenians in 1922 | 19 Oct. 2024, 08:00

In September 1922, the captain of the Japanese merchant ship “Tokei Maru” saved the lives of 825 people—women, children, and men, Greeks and Armenians—from the wrath of the Turks as Smyrna burned.

Unable to bear the magnitude of the tragedy, the captain stood against the Turks, who were demanding that he throw the refugees into the sea.

Who was the captain of the “Tokei Maru,” who became a lifeline for Greeks and Armenians of all ages?

This story is documented and highlighted by “Saturday Shift” through testimonies, narratives, and songs related to the Smyrna Catastrophe of 1922.

Join us for a special radio journey on “Voice of Greece”, on the special Saturday edition of the show “Fair Winds anf Following Seas.”
