On August 15th, Voice of Greece gives sound to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary celebrations in Greece with a specially curated program, dedicated to Greeks around the world.
Each Holy Virgin (‘Panagia’) in Greece has its own location, history, customs and songs, and Voice of Greece will kick off its program on the day at 6.00 am with the show ‘The Virgin Marys of the Aegean’, which is none less than all the little chapels, churches and monasteries of the Holy Virgin you can find in every Aegean island, each with its own distinct aura.
Voice of Greece journalist Thomas Sideris has been in of those chapels with the Lady of Kinaros, in a powerful narration that echoes through and across the Aegean sea.
At 7.00 am, Maria Reboutsika will be selecting modern folk and traditional songs by Greek musicians inspired by the holy Virgin, in her hourly show Musical Horizons.
Next, at 8.00 am, Thomas Sideris will take us to the Church of Panagia Evaggelistria of Tinos, for a live broadcast of the celebratory events of the day, beginning with the transmission of the festive service at the Church of Panagia Megalochari and the tribute to those who were lost during the torpedoing of battleship Elli.
At 13.00 pm, Voice of Greece journalist Prokopis Aggelopoulos will connect live from the studio of Voiceof Greece with Thomas Sideris in Tinos, and then will set sail for the services taking place in churches and monasteries of the Holy Virgin throughout Greece and around the World (Panagia Soumela, the Patriarchate of Alexandria, the Patriarchate of Constantinople, the Archdiocese of Australia, etc.), covering the celebrations from early in the day until 15.00 pm, during his show Take Your Time.

Maria Koutsimpiri will then take over with The Elves of Tradition, featuring rare and original performances of traditional festive songs, from ERT’s musical archives.
The English-language show Greek Music Express at 16.05 pm, carrying us from Panagia of Anogeia and Panagia of Grigorousa, in Crete, to Panagia Sikelia in Chios and Panagia Galatzani in Leros. On this occasion, Hercules Economou embarks on a melodic journey made of songs and that honor the Holy Virgin – from affectionate pleas to exaltations of tenderness, love and hope.
Then, at 17.00 pm, Antonis Karagiannakis will present a two-hour special tribute to Greek seafarers who are sailing across the world’s oceans, featuring sounds from traditional Greek celebratory feasts on his show Fair Winds and Following Seas.
At 19.00 pm, Giannis Papoutsakis will present his tribute ‘The Holy Virgin in Poetry and Song’, during his show Journeys Basking in Greek Light, followed at 20.00 pm. by Giannis ‘Bach’ Spyropoulos, who will conjure up a two-hour musical panorama of religious songs from around the world during his show The Sea Breeze Blows and the Waves Respond. Expect to hear traditional tunes from the Aegean, polyphonic songs from Georgia and Africa, Native American hymns from the Andes, gospel songs, vocal music from Central Europe of the 1st, 3rd and 6th century BC, unique melodies from Asia Minor and Constantinople, as well as compositions by Antonio Vivaldi and Mikis Theodorakis.
By request of Greeks communities abroad, Voice of Greece will then broadcast the archival Music Box episode dedicated to Nikos Xydakis.
The all-day ‘August 15th special’ program of Voice of Greece will close with the show Greek Coffee Shop presented by Aggelos Stathopoulos, who has invited musical performer and actress Eleni Roda for a conversation that will revolve around Manos Loizos, Alexis Damianos, Giorgos Zampetas and more of her collaborations.|
