Voice of Greece program “Narratives” – “Stories and fairy tales for children of all ages” presents six short, instructive stories drawn from Aesop’s legendary fables on Saturday, 01 August 2026, from 19:00 to 20:00 Athens time.
Written in simple, accessible language, Aesop’s fables are intended to entertain and educate children and adults through stories that have been cherished since Greek antiquity.
More than 300 fables are attributed to Aesop, originating from different historical collections. The classical Greek tradition records 725 fables, while modern editions feature between 135 and 179 of the best-known and most enduring Aesopic tales. At their heart is the condemnation of wrongdoing in its most characteristic forms: violence, deceit, injustice, betrayal, vanity, arrogance, dishonesty, greed and cunning.
The historian Herodotus refers to him in his writings as “Aesop, the storyteller,” noting that he lived in ancient Greece during the fifth century BC. Aesop is also mentioned by Aristophanes in his comedy “The Wasps” and by Plato, who refers to the philosopher Socrates recounting his fables. Most of “Aesop’s Fables” were recorded in prose, establishing Aesop as a pioneer of the form at a time when verse was regarded as the principal literary medium.
Children and adults are invited to tune in to ERT’s international radio service and enjoy Aesop’s fables, accompanied by music from beloved animated films and memorable melodies from Disney movies.
