On Friday, 8 August at 17:00 (Athens time), the radio show “The Sweet Life” on Voice of Greece – ERT hosts one of the most iconic ambassadors of Greek gastronomy and culture worldwide.
Costas Spiliadis is contributing this year to the Montreal Symphony Orchestra’s tribute to Mikis Theodorakis, commemorating the composer’s centenary. Through his initiative and support, works by Theodorakis are included in the orchestra’s program (on 13 August at Montreal’s Olympic Park and on 16 August at Maison Symphonique), symbolizing a heartfelt cultural bridge between Greece and Canada.
Born in Patras and raised with the scents and memories of a Greece that no longer exists, Spiliadis brought his philosophy of simplicity and quality across the Atlantic. His first restaurant, Estiatorio Milos, opened in Montreal in 1979 and transformed the perception of Greek cuisine abroad. Over the years, his name has become synonymous with authenticity, with locations in New York, London, Athens, Miami and Dubai.
In this rare interview, he talks about his relationship with Mikis Theodorakis, his tours in the U.S., untold stories and current activities of the Greek community in Canada, and the creation of his global culinary empire that introduced Greek gastronomy to the world. He reflects on fish that evoke the Aegean Sea, the aesthetics and ethics of the Greek table, the afrina of Kythira, and everything carried within a man who never severed ties with his roots.
