Journalist and author Nikos Davvetas will be the guest on Wednesday, 28 January 2026, at 22:00 (Athens time) on Voice of Greece, on the program “Remarkable Personalities” with Stavroula Karali.
Mr. Davvetas, author of the book “Jewish Bride”, which in 2010 received the Novel Award of the Academy of Athens, speaks about the Jewish community in Greece—from the era of the Apostle Paul to the dark days of persecution and the Holocaust.
On the occasion of 27 January, International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the journalist and author offers a well-documented and substantive retrospective of the persecution of the Jews, shedding light on lesser-known and less publicized aspects of history.
The radio discussion traces the persecution and extermination of the Jews of Thessaloniki during World War II. As Mr. Davvetas notes, this dark period reveals two faces of society: on the one hand, Greek families who risk everything to protect their Jewish fellow citizens—hiding them in their homes, “adopting” their children to save them from the concentration camps; and on the other, informers who, in exchange for money, do not hesitate to lead entire families to their deaths.
Special emphasis is placed on the examples of Zakynthos and Volos, which stand out as bright exceptions in the darkness of the time, proving that solidarity and courage can prevail over fear and barbarity. Reference is also made to the Orthodox Church, which stood by Greek Jews—most notably Archbishop of Athens Damaskinos, as well as the Metropolitans of Zakynthos and Volos.
Mr. Davvetas also discusses the postwar period, when the few Jews who survived the concentration camps returned to Greece only to discover that the properties they had left behind were gone.
