Shades of Chios on “Our Town” | 10 May 2025, 12:00

On Saturday, May 10, from 12:00 to 13:00 (Athens time), with a repeat broadcast on Sunday, May 11, from 04:00 to 05:00, the radio program “Our Town” presents a special feature titled “Shades of Chios.”

This episode follows director Nikos Zappas on a compelling journey across the island of Chios, produced for the Hellenic Parliament TV channel. Accompanied by his loyal dog Rosa, Zappas explores villages and landscapes, meets locals, and uncovers the island’s unique character, layered history, and vibrant culture.

Listeners will discover the everyday lives of the island’s people—its neighborhoods, traditional architecture, hospitality, creative trades, gathering spots, old cafés, and small shops that preserve Chios’ authentic charm. Cultural initiatives that shape the island’s modern identity also take center stage.

Zappas shares how his documentary traces the historical narrative of Chios, from its roots in Homeric epics through Roman and Byzantine eras to its post-Byzantine cultural flourishing. The program will also feature music selections inspired by the island.

Nikos Zappas, born in the U.S. and a graduate of UCLA’s film directing program, is known for his historical documentaries and contributions to SL Press.
