Captain Andreas Vrettos from Kassos shares stories about his beloved island, his childhood, and why he chose a life at sea, pursuing a career as a ship engineer.
With 20 years of experience in the maritime industry, he advises young people to stay informed and educated, as advancements in shipping and technology are constantly evolving. He highlights that the profession is competitive, but also highly rewarding.
He embarked on his first voyage in 1984 on the “VIOLETA” from the Mavroleon Company in the Netherlands. One of the most challenging situations he faced occurred in 1986 when the tanker from the Kouloukoundis Company, on which he was traveling, was hit by gunfire in the Persian Gulf. The ship caught fire, but fortunately, everything turned out well.
