Captain Giorgos Georgoulis, lecturer at the Department of Shipping and Business Services at the University of the Aegean, speaks on “Fair Winds and Following Seas” about the recent maritime accident involving the collision of two ships at the Immingham anchorage (waiting anchorage), near the ports of Grimsby and Hull.
This incident has been a major topic in the maritime news. Captain Giorgos discussed the factors that contributed to the relatively fortunate outcome, despite the immediacy and severity of the collision. He also addressed the possible causes of the accident and the dangers posed by the cargo of sodium cyanide carried by one of the vessels, the SOLONG.
As is known, the vessels involved in the collision were the container ship SOLONG, flying the Portuguese flag, which had departed from the port of Scarborough, Scotland, en route to Rotterdam, Netherlands. The SOLONG collided at a speed of 16 knots with the tanker Stena Immaculate, flying the United States flag, which was carrying jet fuel.
