Captain Kostas Yamalakis from Syros talks about maritime education, having served as the Director of Studies at the Merchant Marine Academy of Syros from 1982 to 1992.
“Young people must know well the field they are entering because the sea and the life of a seafarer are quite difficult. The profession of seafaring is beautiful and rewarding if one is properly prepared on all levels and learns to overcome the difficulties it presents. The sea and shipping also have their advantages,” says the seasoned captain and maritime educator.
He concludes by sharing a story about the M/V BELLATRIX (pictured), when during the ship’s delivery and a one-day voyage from Kakinda, India to Moghla, Bangladesh, it turned into a five-day journey full of problems. There was a 10-force gale, the ship tilted 18 degrees, the hatches wouldn’t close, all three anchors broke, yet they managed to get through it.
