The experienced and seasoned Captain Stratis Skapinakis from Vrontado, Chios, continues his story for the second day about his journey on ships and the sea. “Of course, friendships are formed on ships, but with those whose personalities match yours more and with whom you’ve shared certain experiences,” Captain Stratis tells us.
He recalls some difficult moments, saying, “In 1960, we were shipwrecked off the coast of Ireland. Luckily, we were unharmed, and it was October, so it wasn’t cold. Another tough situation I found myself in was in Fujairah, in the Persian Gulf at the harbor. While we were loading, a strong sandstorm hit, darkening the sky, and we had to quickly close the holds with much running and effort.”
