The head of the design department of Gutenberg Publications, Giannis Mamais from Andros, one of the few old master typographers of Greece and author of the book “Arodo”, was a guest in this episode of Antonis Karagiannakis show “Fair Winds and Following Seas”.
Gutenberg Publications was founded by his brother George Dardanos and they have been working together since 1964. A few years later he proposed to the editorial board of the magazine “Nisos Andros”, to make a topic about ships of all kinds and coastal shipping in post-war Andros. He searched everywhere to find evidence and photographs of boats, ships, sailors and the ports of the island of that time. For 2.5 years he traveled Andros from door to door and from village to village three times and about 18 to 20 suburbs of Attica to find material and thus created this amazing edition, titled “Arodo”.
In the presentation of the material, a balance had to be kept between the four ports of Andros and not for one to be superior to others.
In the 2-hour episode, the author describes amazing images, amazing stories and nautical figures that made history for “sailor mother” Andros of that time.
He works as a publishing editor, trying to show younger people what typographic elegance means. He has published more than 1,600 books, most of which came from Gutenberg Publications. During our conversation, we talk about books today in Greece, about Andros, sailors, the sea and much more.
