Religious music for Easter – Michalis Grigoriou and the “Dark Act” oratorio, part 1
Holy Week aboard GME is full of music that evokes reverence and devotion. Holy Monday and Holy Tuesday are dedicated to the Dark Act, a superb oratorio by Michalis Grigoriou based on the poetry of Tasos Livaditis. Michalis Grigoriou recalls: “The Dark Act is a work that lasts for an hour and a half, written for orchestra, chorus and soloists, and therefore it took some months of work to be completed. But this was not the real difficulty, it was simply a toil. The real difficulty was for me to decide to write the play. I spent months suffering, being miserable, wondering whether there was any point in attempting it. But when I decided to proceed, I completed the composition in a very short time, almost at the pace of dictation”.
