Greeks Around the World: Aggela Despotidou & George Siougas (Greece in the UK) | 25 Feb. 2024

Voice of Greece, ERT’s global radio, has included the “Greeks around the world” series in its program since 2022. These are shows curated by Greeks abroad, in the country where they live, introducing us to our fellow Greeks and their local activities.

The beginning was with the Greeks of Denmark, continued with the Greeks of Luxembourg and the Greeks of Argentina and now we are pleased to announce that the Greeks of the United Kingdom are joining the series.

It is noted that in recent years there has been a large wave of immigration from Greece to the UK, resulting in London competing with Melbourne in the title of the 3rd largest Greek-speaking city in the world.

The new show “Greeks around the world – Greece in the United Kingdom” which will be broadcast every last Sunday of the month, at 10:00 am Athens time, is curated and presented by the young journalist Eliana Nunes – a Greek-British national.

The first episode of “Greeks around the World – Greece in the United Kingdom” will be broadcast on Sunday, February 25, 2024, at 10:00 Athens time and is dedicated to cinema. Guests on the show are director George Siougas and editor Angela Despotidou.

George Siougas lives permanently with his family in Manchester where he has been working since 2015. His short film The One Note Man has won 24 awards in five months, and was nominated in a shortlisted category of the Academy Awards for Short Films and the British BAFTA Awards. His impressive CV includes other award-winning films, such as “Burning Heads”, which was nominated for 11 awards by the Hellenic Film Academy, including the award for Best Director.

Aggela Despotidou, moving between Greece and England, she edited three films in 2023: “Woaca”, “The After” which is nominated for an Academy Award and “Murderess” which was awarded with 6 awards at the 64th Thessaloniki International Film Festival and won the Greek audience by exceeding 430,000 tickets.
