Varvara Athanasiou Ioannou from Melbourne on “Faraway Words” | 18 June 2024

The show hosted the award-winning Greek woman from Australia, Varvara Athanasiou Ioannou, founder of the NGO “Food for thought Network – Spiritual Food Network of Greek Women in Australia” and author of “Her Voice – Greek Women and their friends” and spoke about the 1st Conference “Women and Hellenism” that she is organizing in Ioannina, from 2 to 6 September 2024. The conference will focus on the complex identity of women, from antiquity to the present day, and how their identity as Hellenes (Hellenism as a common denominator) has shaped their development at home or abroad. About 50 women from various sectors, entrepreneurs, scientists, writers, academics, politicians, from Greece and abroad will speak at the conference. They will talk about their personal experiences, the obstacles they have encountered in their professional life, the issue of domestic violence, artificial intelligence and how it will change our lives, etc. Among the speakers are the award-winning scientist Vasso Apostolopoulou, who supports Food For Thought net, the Honorary Mayor of Solingen Germany and President of the Network of Greek Authorities of Europe Ms. Ioanna Zacharaki, the expatriate activist and founder of the NGO “Teach Us Consent” from London, the Cypriot-born soprano Christianna Alonefti from Munich, the mayor of Kalamaria Chrysa Arapoglou, etc.

It is noted that during the conference, excursions will take place in order for the speakers and those attending to get to know Epirus and the history of women of Epirus, from Kyra Frosini and the Souliotis to the first Greek woman who emigrated to Australia, Ekaterini Plessa, who was born in the court of Ali Pasha.
