Greek-Australian photographer Konstantinos Korsovitis was the guest on this episode of “Faraway Words”. Dividing his time between Australia and Greece, Korsovitis spent the last two decades living in Southeast Asia, closely observing the Wayang shadow puppetry tradition—not only during performances and festivals but also within the daily lives of its puppeteers and communities.
Since 1999, he has documented this world in a major long-term project that includes a photography book (A Life in Shadows, 2024, River Books), a research archive, a short documentary, and a touring exhibition.
The interview was prompted by the launch of the exhibition “A Life in Shadows”, currently on view at Blank Wall Gallery in Kypseli, showcasing part of his photographic work on Southeast Asian shadow theatre.
Korsovitis emphasized the urgent need to preserve shadow puppetry not only in Asia but also in Greece, where this tradition is equally rich and at risk of fading.
