In a historic village of Epirus, the birthplace of Georgios Karaiskakis, Skoulikaria in Arta, we were guided through the program “Common Ground” on Tuesday, 21 April 2026.
Our guides—joining us as studio guests—were Mr Lefteris Papakostas, historian and author, and Mr Periklis Migdos, Mayor of the Karaiskakis Municipality. We also spoke by phone with Mr Dimitris Krabis, President of the Association of Skoulikaria natives worldwide, and Mr Vangelis Trimpos, a migrant in Germany who, after many years abroad, returned to his village to invest his savings in a local hospitality business.
Through stories, descriptions, historical references and personal testimonies, listeners are invited to discover a distinctive place perched in the mountainous region of Arta, at an altitude of nearly 1,000 metres, between the town of Arta and the Achelous River—a place that has produced notable figures in letters, science and the arts, and which today, like many such places across Greece, struggles to remain vibrant and alive.
