Gerasimos Pagoulatos, Honorary Consul of Greece in Sudan, spoke about the current situation in the capital, Khartoum, and more broadly across the country, where—according to the United Nations—the largest humanitarian crisis of the 21st century is unfolding. He was interviewed on Voice of Greece radio, on the program “Our Global Voice” with Dimitris Kontogiannis.
Mr. Pagoulatos, whose family has owned the legendary Acropole Hotel in central Khartoum since 1952, also spoke about the history of the Greek community, which once flourished with its school and church, as well as his own family’s presence in the country. He highlighted the destruction caused by the civil war that has been ongoing since April 2023. Although order is gradually being restored in Khartoum and other parts of the country, leading some Sudanese to return, this is not the case for Greek Sudanese.
However, the scale of the damage remains immense, including the buildings of the Greek community, the church, and the Acropole Hotel itself, which the Pagoulatos family is not considering reopening.
