Greek immigrants in the cities of English-speaking countries were mostly small business owners, while those who lived in the countryside did heavy manual labor, as the professor of Greek history, writer and researcher Anastasios Tamis, who is based in Melbourne, Australia, emphatically states. He recounts the history of Greek migration on the show “Our Global Voice” on the radio station of the Voice of Greece, to Dimitris Kontogiannis and Petros Diplas.

The small shops, i.e. cafés, bakeries, fishmongers, etc. provided sustenance for Hellenism in the cities, since the rest of the Greeks could find work there. However, the hardest jobs would be found in the countryside, with inhumane working conditions, e.g. lime factories, mines, foundries, railways, reed plantations, slaughterhouses, etc.
