The small shops, i.e. cafés, bakeries, fishmongers, etc. provided sustenance for Hellenism in the cities, since the rest of the Greeks could find work there. However, the hardest jobs would be found in the countryside, with inhumane working conditions, e.g. lime factories, mines, foundries, railways, reed plantations, slaughterhouses, etc.
