“Greek Music Express” celebrates Easter with songs about God | 13 – 17 Apr. 2025

Unlike previous years when, here at GME, we chose religious or devotional music for Easter, this year we turn to Greek song and how it converses with the divine element, with God. There is no end to the references of our song to God, as there is no end to the injustices or pain or love or anticipation that make us turn to religious invocation.

On Holy Monday we choose modern-day ballads – from Vasilis Papakonstantinou and “The Guitarist of God” to “The Hands of God” with Katerina Kyrmizi.

Holy Tuesday has more classical characteristics, with Nana Mouskouri wondering “Which God wanted it?” and Giorgos Romanos asking “Where is God?”.

On Holy Wednesday we shed light on the inspiration that the folk muse draws from God, with Paschalis Terzis observing “Another is the god of the world” and Elias Klonaridis comfortingly saying “Christ, you are not alone”.

Holy Thursday marks a more subdued tone, with Nena Venetsanou remembering “You were a child, like Christ” and Areti Bellou confessing “I loved you like Christ”.

Finally, on Good Friday we listen to sad songs that refer to the day itself – with the voices of Phoebus Delivorias, Vicky Moscholiou, Manolis Mitsias, Eleni Tsaligopoulou and Vasilis Korakakis, among others. We conclude our tribute with Dimitris Mitropanos’ plea for equality and justice: “Christ, do me a favour tonight / that the ones lagging behind may come forward”.
