Holy Week on “Greek Music Express”

The English-language music program of Voice of Greece, “Greek Music Express” with Hercules Economou, draws a powerful connection between Easter and the sacrifice of Christ and the sacrifice of the 200 Resistance fighters executed in Kaisariani in 1944.

Photographs from their execution were recently discovered in Belgium and acquired by the Greek state. Inspired both by the Passion of Jesus and the struggle against fascism, the program features musical works related to Holy Week, as well as songs referring to places of imprisonment and execution of Resistance fighters. From “Epitaphios” by Yannis Ritsos and Mikis Theodorakis to “Epitaph Days” by Nikos Gatsos and Stavros Papadimitriou, and from “Ilioskopio” by Themelis and Giorgos Kouioumtzis to Kaisariani and Akronafplia, Greek song pays tribute to self-sacrifice in both its religious and secular dimensions.

Moving to “Greek Music Express – Musical Suburbs”, the Greek-language version of the program, Holy Saturday celebrates the Resurrection with songs about people reborn and hearts revived through love, while on Easter Sunday the celebration continues with songs and tunes from the islands, Cyprus, and Smyrna.
