On the Monday, June 9, 2025 broadcast- Pentecost Monday – we began with a look at current affairs, browsing the top headlines from major news websites.
We then spoke with Mr. Themis Bakas, president of the e-Real Estate network, about the ongoing issue of short-term rentals and their prominent role in this year’s accommodation “safari” for both international visitors and local travelers.
Next, we connected with Dr. Eleni Nastouli, the Greek virologist at University College London, to discuss summer viruses, the recent measles outbreak in the UK—largely attributed to low vaccination rates—and the lingering effects of COVID-19 and the global pandemic.
From Amorgos, Professor of Geology Evi Nomikou joined us to explain the significance of the Fisher Medal—one of the highest international distinctions in volcanology—which she will receive in Geneva on July 2nd.
We also had the pleasure of listening to two tracks from the debut album of young Greek diaspora musician Eleanna Pitsikaki, known to listeners of Voice of Greece for her virtuosity on the kanonaki. We spoke with her about her artistic journey, the evolution of her work, and her plans for the future.
Lastly, we wrapped up the program with filmmaker Eleni Alexandrakis, whose film Giannis In the Cities (Θολός Βυθός) recently received two major awards—Best Film and Audience Award—at the Los Angeles Greek Film Festival. The film sheds light on one of the lesser-known and darker chapters of Greek history, as narrated by author Giannis Atzakas. The film is based on his autobiographical books.
