“Water Myths” – Part I | 23 May 2026, 17:00

If you wish to learn how the waves were born, who the prince of the rain is, how the River Ganges came into being, what became of the dragon of the sea, and other secrets of nature, then all you have to do is journey on the enchanted wings of myth. You will find yourself in Ancient Greece, but also in distant corners of the world — Ethiopia, Lithuania, India, Peru, New Zealand, China, Japan…”

Ten luminous myths from around the world devoted to the element of water are presented in the program “Narratives – Stories and Fairy Tales for Children and Grown-Ups”, airing on Saturday, 23 May 2026, from 17:00 to 18:00 Athens time on Voice of Greece. The episode is inspired by the book “Water Myths” by Konstantina Armeniakou and Efthymia Andrioti, with illustrations by Renia Metallinou, published by Kalendis Editions.

Through ten mythological tales drawn from different cultures, listeners are invited on a journey through stories shaped by water, nature, memory, and imagination — stories born in the distant past, yet deeply connected to the anxieties and hopes of the present and the future. Konstantina Armeniakou and Efthymia Andrioti, educators with a vibrant presence in children’s literature and the cultivation of reading culture, bring together myths from across the world, guiding audiences through landscapes where storytelling becomes a bridge between civilizations.

Renia Metallinou’s richly textured illustrations, infused with visual elements distinctive to each culture, evoke the atmosphere of every place and era with remarkable sensitivity. Each myth stands as a timeless human attempt to explain the origins of the world and interpret the forces of nature, while reflecting the beliefs, customs, and spiritual imagination of different peoples.

Through these stories, children are encouraged to discover the precious value of the natural world, while recognizing the universal human longing to understand the mysteries of creation and existence itself.

Produced and presented by Maria Karagiannaki Iona
Broadcast: Saturday, 23 May 2026, at 17:00 Athens time.
