Statis Prousalis: A rebel with a cause | 20 July 2026

We trace the remarkable journey of Statis Prousalis, a celebrated singer in the former Czechoslovakia. A legendary figure with an extensive body of work, his personal story was shaped by the course of history.

The name Statis is embedded in the Greek word epanastatis, meaning “rebel.” He was the son of political refugees, fighters in the Democratic Army of Greece who fled to what was then the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic.

Prousalis built a legend around his name and his music. He was adored by local audiences and sang with passion. Greeks also held him close to their hearts because he never forgot his roots or the history of his long-suffering people.
