Distinguished lyricist, poet and teacher Christos G. Papadopoulos was a guest in the Voice of Greece studio. He has lived in Cairo, Egypt, for the past 20 years. There, he taught as a teacher seconded from Greece and served for many years as president of the Greek Cultural Center of Cairo. He runs the Facebook page “ΠαλιάΤΖΟΥΡΕΣ,” where he writes about and republishes historical material on the Greeks of Egypt from his personal archive. He also produces and presents the Greek-language program “Μια φορά κι ένα Κάιρο” on Egyptian state radio.
Papadopoulos discussed his work in poetry, particularly poems of his that have been set to music. He also spoke about meeting Manos Hadjidakis, an encounter that played an important role in his life. He expressed admiration for the Alexandrian poet Constantine Cavafy, saying Cavafy was the reason he was drawn to Egypt, and for Kostis Moskoff.
The conversation also explored the Greeks of Egypt, their contribution to the development of the modern Egyptian state, and what they have contributed to Greece.
