“Take Your Time” with Prokopis Agelopoulos welcomed Kostas Vatskalis, former Lord Mayor of Darwin and former senior minister in Australia’s Northern Territory government, to the studio.
Vatskalis left Athens in 1983 after falling in love with an Australian woman and moving to her home country. He went on to make his mark on political life in Australia and its Greek community for more than two decades. He made history as Darwin’s first Lord Mayor of Greek descent, serving from 2017 to 2025. Before entering local government, he had an equally distinguished career in territorial politics. He was repeatedly elected as the Labor member for Casuarina from 2001 to 2014, holding several key ministerial portfolios during his time in parliament.
During the conversation, we also spoke with Giorgos Menidis, artistic director of the Greek Community of Melbourne, about the 31st Greek Film Festival of Australia, running from 13 to 25 October in Sydney and Melbourne.
