On Friday, 16 October 2026, we reviewed the day’s news through the newspaper headlines before asking Dimitris Karaitidis, ambassador emeritus, to analyze President Donald Trump’s moves ahead of the U.S. midterm elections, energy challenges, and the deadlocks that U.S. policies have created on the major war fronts.
Next, journalist and documentary filmmaker Giorgos Avgeropoulos spoke about his film “INFERNO – Climate Crisis in the Mediterranean,” which is nominated for PRIX EUROPA 2026. The documentary examines the consequences of policies addressing the climate crisis in the Mediterranean. It is the investigative journalist’s second film on the climate crisis, following “Mankind’s Folly,” which focused on the Arctic and received a Special Mention at PRIX EUROPA 2025.
In the second hour, following international news with Ivana Djordjevic, we welcomed Kostas Vatskalis, former mayor of Darwin, Australia, and former minister in the Northern Territory government, to the Voice of Greece studio. He left Greece in 1983, moving to Australia for love. His restless spirit and commitment to democratic values led him into politics with the Labor Party, serving as a minister responsible for seven portfolios in the Northern Territory government and later as mayor of Darwin for two terms.
During our conversation, we spoke by phone with Giorgos Menidis, artistic director of the Greek Community of Melbourne, for an update on the 31st Greek Film Festival in Australia.
The program concluded with sports news presented by Antigoni Drakatou.
