Narratives: A tribute to the 50th anniversary of the restoration of Democracy | 20 July 2024, 17:00

On Saturday, July 20, 2024, at 17:00 Athens time, the show “Narratives Fairy tales for young and older children” with Maria Karagiannaki- Iona, presents a special tribute to the 50th anniversary of the restoration of Democracy, from the pages of the book “King Makrypogonatos and the book that changed the world” by Aimilia Emmanouil (KEDROS publications).

Our great-grandparents, the citizens of “Flaflagonia”, changed the country’s government one night in 1843 with their revolution, demanding King Otto the consession of a constitution. They made the first great step, demolishing the regime of absolute monarchy and changing it to Constitutional monarchy. As citizens, now, and not as subjects, they acquired rights drafted in the first book called Τhe Constitution, which was passed in 1864. Since then our country has changed several constitutions. Today, the revised 1975 constitution is in use. The large square where the uprising took place in front of the palace of King Otho was called “Constitution Square” (Πλατεία Συντάγματος), keeping its name until today, while the building of the then palaces is today the seat of the Hellenic Parliament!

Produced and presented by Maria Karagiannaki – Iona
Broadcast: Saturday 20 June 2024, 17:00-18:00 Athens time
