[ The Ship’s Log – 30 October 2026 ]

Captain Manolis Vintiadis, from Kasos, an island with a proud seafaring tradition, shares memories of his first voyages and early days at sea in “The Ship’s Log.” In his own distinctive style, he recalls his first berth and describes life and work aboard ship:
“I first went to sea just after finishing high school, in September 1965, aboard the M/V MARIGOULA, operated by Zacharis–Vasilias. She was a little cargo ship of just 1,000 tons, and we carried fertilizer from the Black Sea. I didn’t stay long—just two months—and signed off in Itea. In December that same year, I joined the M/V KASSIAN MARINER, a tanker operated by Markou.
“Later, I joined the M/V PEGASUS, operated by Rethymnis & Kulukundis (R&K). That’s where you see me in the photograph, suspended in a boatswain’s chair—what we Greek sailors call a kolosanido—applying oil-based paint to the derrick supports with a wad of cotton waste. The photograph was taken in the Pacific Ocean, while we were sailing to Japan.”
