Katia Nikolaou – The Greek Cypriot who helped Mamdani become Mayor | 19 Dec. 2025, 10:30

Katia Nikolaou left her homeland of Cyprus in 1981, while still a student, to settle in New York. There, she completed her studies in Computer Science and Sociology and went on to build her professional life in the United States—teaching in schools, starting a family, and, in recent years, working as an interpreter. Life’s paths—hardly by chance—led her to Zohran Mamdani, and she played a significant role in supporting his rise to the office of Mayor of New York.

On Friday, 19 December 2025, at 10:30, on the program “Take Your Time” on Voice of Greece, we meet Katia Nikolaou through an interview with Prokopis Agelopoulos. She speaks about her life in New York, her relationship with the city’s new mayor—whom she describes with enthusiasm, highlighting his character and personality—her contact with Bernie Sanders, her enduring ties to her homeland of Cyprus and to Greece, as well as her close connection with the Greek Community of New York.
