A tribute to the island of Mykonos (Part I) | 01 Sept. 2024

The show “Our Town” presents a tribute to the island of Mykonos. The program showcases important documents and writings from notable figures about the history of this unique island, as well as the current conditions that create significant uncertainty for its residents.

Nikos Xydakis discusses the island’s authentic traditions, the “Mykoniatiki” newspaper, the unique Melpo Axioti, the natural landscape, and the invaluable elements that are being lost.

Author Dimitris Rousounelos talks about the books he has written on the island’s culinary culture, including traditional practices like the pig slaughters, kopanisti cheese, wine, and other unique local products.

Director Kostas Ferris highlighs the hippie era in Mykonos, sharing stories he lived through that became an integral part of the island’s character.

Actor and musician Giannis Zouganelis discusses the island’s precious folklore and musical heritage, as well as the elements that make Mykonos a special place.

Musician Petros Veronis touches on the island’s cultural life today and the musicians who gather there to create inspiring work.

Artistic producer Giorgos Poulidis talks about the upcoming photography exhibition of his father, Christos Poulidis, one of Greece’s most important photographers. This exhibition, to be held in Mykonos next month, will highlight the social life and personalities who loved the island, showcasing a significant part of Greece’s tourism history.

Director Antonis Theocharis Kioukas speak about important figures of the island’s folk culture, other international artists, his significant films, and the Manto Cinema in Mykonos, which he manages.

Finally, actor Michalis Maniatis shares his personal reflections on Mykonos.

The show also mentions famous personalities who have visited the island: Soraya, Dalí, Newman, Grace Kelly, Brando, Jackie Kennedy, Onassis, Callas, Mercury, the Beatles, Liz Taylor, Burton, and many renowned painters, photographers, and writers.
