On Sunday, June 8, 2025, “Our Town” presented a heartfelt tribute to Thanos Mikroutsikos, one of Greece’s most influential contemporary composers.
Mikroutsikos left an indelible mark on Greek culture with his wide-ranging body of work, which includes operas, chamber and symphonic music, experimental compositions, and scores for theater and film.
Joining the program are his wife, Maria Papayanni, and long-time collaborators Kostas Thomaidis, Thymios Papadopoulos, Rita Antonopoulou, as well as Hercules Economou, editor of the book “Thanos Mikroutsikos – Chasing Utopia.”
The discussion explores Mikroutsikos’ deep connection with poetry, the political and social undertones of his work, and his significant role in shaping cultural policy.
Guests also reflect on his magnetic presence—on stage, in the studio, and among friends. A devoted family man, a generous mentor to young artists, and an engaged citizen with sharp wit and great warmth, Mikroutsikos inspired a loyal following throughout his life.
The tribute highlights cities he loved and performed in, as well as the innovative sound he introduced to Greek music.
Songs from different periods of his career are featured, along with commentary that underscores the depth, originality, and lasting appeal of his music.
