Athens in Two Speeds: Notis Paraskevopoulos’ proposal for the overwhelming traffic problem | 14 Nov. 2024

During his interview with Prokopis Agelopoulos on the show “Take Your Time”, transport expert Notis Paraskevopoulos presented a new proposal to address Athens’ severe traffic congestion, particularly during the morning hours when the central arteries, like Kifisos, experience heavy bottlenecks.
Paraskevopoulos, who originally introduced the ring road concept to reduce pollution, suggested a “city of two speeds” plan. This plan would divide lanes on major roads: one exclusively for buses, a central lane for professional vehicles and cars with four or more passengers, and another lane for those in less of a hurry. He also proposed the use of the left lane for buses moving in the opposite direction to prevent other vehicles from occupying the bus lane.

Paraskevopoulos emphasized that the ring road should have been a temporary solution, and he discussed how other major cities worldwide have implemented similar measures. Additionally, he addressed the need for improvements in public transport, suggesting privatization and stricter government oversight to ensure better service. He also highlighted safety concerns, citing the tragic train accident in Tempi and advocating for simple safety measures, such as apps for train drivers, to improve security.
