Captain Nikos Thermos from the village of Englouvi in Lefkada took the helm of the radio show “Fair Winds and Following Seas” on Voice of Greece. Sipping his “Byzantine coffee,” as he calls it, he shared stories about his beloved island Lefkada and his life at sea, spanning more than 30 years. “At sea, you have to rely on your own strength, your knowledge, and experience—don’t expect others to help. We respect and love the sea, and sometimes, it demands a little risk,” Captain Nikos said.
He recounted two stories: one involving the passenger ship Grecia facing fierce 8-9 Beaufort winds in the Adriatic Sea on a route from Bari to Albania. He also shared a story from 1993, about paying off an unpaid bill for his friend Alekos, a cadet engineer, in Santos, Brazil, where Alekos was stationed with the ship Gall.He recounted two stories: one involving the passenger ship Grecia facing fierce 8-9 Beaufort winds in the Adriatic Sea on a route from Bari to Albania.
