“Faraway Words” on Youth Theatre on Air | 28 Apr. 2025

For the sixth consecutive year, children and teenagers from Greece, Cyprus, and Australia come together for the festival “Theatre in Front of a Microphone” – Youth Theatre on Air, a cross-cultural celebration of radio theatre. The event is a collaboration between the Theatrical Visual Arts Center “Poupoulo” (Thessaloniki, Greece), the Motivation in Arts Foundation (Paphos, Cyprus), and the Creative Drama & Arts Centre (Melbourne, Australia).

Joining the program from Thessaloniki, Rita Poutachidou spoke about the evolution of this initiative, which now stands as a beloved tradition. The festival’s mission is to carry the Greek language, culture, and theatrical expression across the airwaves and online to Hellenic communities around the world. Its unique strength lies in its digital nature — unbounded by geography, open to all, and accessible through the global web. It brings together young Greeks from across the globe, creating a network of “satellites” for the sharing of Greek culture and creativity.

As Poutachidou noted, nearly 3,500 children and teens have participated over the course of the six editions. This year’s opening ceremony will take place on Saturday, May 3rd, with awards presented to the top theatrical podcasts. Public voting remains open until Thursday, May 1st, 2025.
