Professor of Human Genetics at the University of Geneva, Stylianos Antonarakis, was hosted today on the show “Take Your Time” with Prokopis Agelopoulos, in light of his upcoming award at the Vatican with the Vexillum Sciacca 2024 Award for Medical Genetics.
The Awards Ceremony for International Personalities will take place on Saturday, September 28, 2024, in the presence of His Eminence Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke, Honorary President of the “Vexillum” Foundation, as well as ecclesiastical, political, and military authorities.
Stylianos Antonarakis and his research laboratory have discovered the etiology of many hereditary diseases, such as Mediterranean anemia, hemophilia, and over 40 other diseases. He was responsible for the sequencing of chromosome 21 of the human genome, both in its initial phase and throughout this major biological program.
He discovered nearly all the genes on chromosome 21 and extensively studied the genomic variability that predisposes individuals to human diseases.
He conducted extensive research on trisomy 21 and discovered the origin of the third chromosome in this pathological condition. He created the World Down Syndrome Day, which contributes to the integration of individuals with this condition into society
