“Our Town” tribute to World Greek Language Day with guest Professor Ioannis Korintios | 08 Feb. 2025

“Our Town” celebrates World Greek Language Day with a special tribute to the significance of our language, now honored in cities around the world.

This day, dedicated to the Greek language and Hellenophony, is linked to the passing of Dionysios Solomos on February 9, 1857, Greece’s national poet. It was officially established in 2017 by a joint decision of the Ministers of Interior, Foreign Affairs, and Education.

The initiative was spearheaded by Ioannis Korinthios, the visionary behind its establishment, who joins the show to discuss the global admiration for Greek language and culture. “Many Philhellenes, university and high school professors, and literary societies actively teach and promote Greek, fostering a lasting sense of wonder and reverence for it,” he notes.

Today, a worldwide network of Philhellenes, along with Greek communities abroad, embraces this initiative, promoting knowledge, peace, and friendship.

Naples has been at the heart of these celebrations, marking the occasion each year with grandeur. This year, the event coincides with the 2,500-year anniversary of the city’s founding by Greeks. The main celebration will take place on February 10 at the iconic Basilica San Paolo Maggiore, featuring young students from high schools and universities across the globe, along with artists and cultural figures.
