On Friday, August 16, 2024, we began the show with a greeting from Preveza, featuring Polykarmos Chalkidis, a representative of hoteliers in the Panhellenic Federation, who discussed the region’s tourism trends and the costs of dining services.
Following the newspaper headlines, we spoke with Giannis Chatzitheodosiou, president of the Athens Chamber of Commerce, about businesses affected by the recent fires and their long-term consequences. He also addressed the costs of insuring homes and businesses against fire damage, noting the low percentage of insured properties.
Next, Antonis Rallatos, a forester and board member of the Panhellenic Association of Public Sector Foresters, explained the necessary year-round steps to properly prepare for fire season, emphasizing the importance of permanent forestry workers for forest cleaning, thinning, and creating firebreaks.
The first hour concluded with international news updates from Ivana Djordjevic.
In the second hour, we spoke with Xenofon Spitadakis, president of the Greek Scouts, about the safety regulations that should govern children’s camps and swimming pools, following the tragic drowning of an 8-year-old girl in a camp pool in Kassandra, Halkidiki.
Later in the studio, we welcomed Konstantinos Sflomos, professor emeritus of Chemistry and Food Toxicology at the University of West Attica. We discussed the impact of the fires on food products from regions like Northeastern Attica. Just before the show ended, we had a phone call with Giorgos Kapellakis, president of the Hellenic Paralympic Committee, who updated us on the Greek team’s preparations for the Paralympic Games in Paris, starting on August 28, with hopes for athlete success. The show wrapped up with sports news from Dimitris Giahanakis in the studio.
