Capt. Dimitris Tsiropinas from Chios, an island with a long seafaring tradition, takes the helm of “Fair Winds and Following Seas” on Voice of Greece.
“The sea cannot be described in a few words. It is my whole life. I have so many experiences and memories that I could talk about it for hours. Now that I’m retired, I recall it and relive it from the beginning in my own way,” he says.
He first went to sea as a sailor aboard the troubled cargo ship M/V Ioniki Akti in July 1965. He was just 17 (pictured) and had finished six years of secondary school the day before. His pay was £42 a month.
“The start of my career was very difficult. The ship had sunk before and was short of crew. But I sailed with some very good seafarers and learned many useful things that helped me throughout my later years at sea,” Capt. Dimitris says.
