Although his family had no ties to the sea or shipping, from a young age Captain Giannis Bourboutzoglou was drawn to ships and sailors in Platana, Evia—a seaside village near Kymi with a deep maritime tradition.
He graduated from the Merchant Marine Academy of Oinousses in 1980, and shortly after embarked from Piraeus on his first voyage, sailing to Alexandria and then Beirut aboard the M/V HELLENIC VALOR.
“It takes sweat, effort, hard work, respect, experience, knowledge, love, and much more to become a captain – as it does in any profession. This was the path I chose, and I have never regretted it,” says Captain Bourboutzoglou.
