Captain Giannis Soldatos took the helm of the program “Fair Winds & Following Seas” on Voice of Greece.
He spoke about Meganisi and Lefkada, and about how he decided to follow a career at sea. A descendant of a maritime family, he graduated from the Merchant Marine Academy of Aspropyrgos.
His great-grandfather owned a 100-ton sailing vessel that travelled across the Mediterranean, transporting goods.
Captain Soldatos’s first voyage was on the M/V Miaoulis in coastal shipping, followed by the M/V Olympic Arrow, before moving on to cargo ships, tankers, and OBOs.
“In total, I worked on fifteen ships and travelled all over the world before becoming captain of fire-fighting and rescue vessels here in Greece. I always preferred the older ships — they teach you more about the sea, life on board, the weather, and navigation,” he noted, among other things.
