Dr. Orestis Schinas, professor in the University of the Aegean’s Department of Shipping and founder of HHX.blue, speaks to “Fair Winds and Following Seas” on Voice of Greece.
He discusses his return to Greece after 20 years in Hamburg, Germany, where he taught shipping finance. His research focuses on financing the green transition of maritime systems.
“At HHX.blue, our main work is maritime finance, and we are particularly interested in greening,” Dr. Schinas says. “We focus on the next generation of ships, the ships of tomorrow, as well as the issues facing the shipping market during this transition.”
Speaking about decarbonization, Dr. Schinas stresses: “Today, we have no alternative to oil. Shipping, particularly deep-sea shipping, has no alternative. Common global rules must apply to everyone to prevent inequalities and problems. A global carbon tax should be introduced and apply equally to all. Shipping needs global solutions without discrimination.”
