a) FILOPAPPOU: A long-standing battle between citizens and the Ministry of Culture: On 17/10/2025, five citizens stand trial accused of “false accusation”, after they lawfully prevented the fencing of the Hill of the Pnyx with a two-metre-high, heavy-type barrier. A SLAPP lawsuit, demanding €30,000 from the citizens, while their appeal against the Ministerial Decision led the Council of State to issue a temporary suspension order halting the works.
b) SOUTHEASTERN & NORTHEASTERN AEGEAN: What was prevented on the islets of the Southeastern Aegean in the summer of 2025 — and what looms ahead with the planned electrical interconnection between Lemnos and Lesvos: the installation of wind farms by the Spanish energy giant Iberdrola — 153 turbines in Western Lesvos, 125 in Lemnos (one of Greece’s last unspoiled landscapes), 75 in Northern and Central Chios, floating wind turbines 280 metres high just 2 km off Psara, Agios Efstratios, and the Amani peninsula of Chios — plus solar parks on Chios’s burned areas and prospecting for antimony extraction in the same region. Under a special legislative provision, Iberdrola is exempt from covering the interconnection cost — the €1.2 billion project will be financed by Greece’s Independent Power Transmission Operator, meaning by the citizens themselves.
We speak with Aki Papasarantis, sailor, member of the Filopappou Citizens’ Movement and the Movement for the Protection of the Islets.
