“Narratives”: Traditional Greek fairy tales – A tribute (Part II) | 13 July 2024

The show “Narratives – Fairy tales for Children and Grown Ups” with Maria Karagiannaki-Iona presents three selected traditional Greek tales from the collection “Traditional Greek fairy tales”, on the second part of the show’s tribute to important fairy tales of our cultural heritage.

The first fairy tale, “Shall I Tell You About the Fates?” originates from Xiromero Aitoloakarnania in Central Greece. It was preserved by Mrs Paraskevi Apostolopoulou, who heard it from her father’s stories. Variations of this tale can be found in the book “Folklore of Xiromero Akarnania” by M.F. Karamesinis.

The second fairy tale, “The Daughter, the Nun,” comes from the region of Kastoria in Macedonia It was preserved by Mr Giorgos Paliatsos, who recalls it from his childhood memories, “…when the grandmothers were still telling stories in the courtyards of the mansions under the plane trees,” as he fondly notes. The third and final fairy tale in our tribute is “The Heifer with Golden Feet,” from the island of Rhodes in the Dodecanese. This traditional tale of Rhodes was preserved by Mrs Irini Polia, who remembers her grandmother’s childhood stories.
