Trifonas Tzimopoulos: “The sea is my wife” | Part One | 14 Sept. 2026

Veteran seafarer Trifonas Tzimopoulos from Grevena takes the helm of “Fair Winds and Following Seas” on Voice of Greece.

Tzimopoulos speaks about his great love, the sea, which he calls “my wife.” “The sea is everything to me. I go to the shore and look at it, and it makes me feel calm and peaceful. Although I am now retired after 27 years of service at sea, I considered suspending my pension and returning to the ships and the sea I love so much.”

His journey into seafaring began when he saw an advertisement for maritime careers on a matchbox.

I first saw the sea when I was seven or eight years old, when my parents and I traveled from Grevena to Thessaloniki. I was deeply impressed. It captivated me as I gazed at it from the White Tower. At the age of 15, with my father’s signature, I embarked on my first voyage aboard the M/V Eagle. It was a general cargo ship operated by the Galanis company. I joined it in Rotterdam and sailed to Lisbon, then to America and later Canada. I was the best at the helm,” Trifonas recalls with great emotion.
