On Skyros in 1965, seventeen-year-old Kleanthi suddenly learns one evening that her father has arranged her marriage. A few years earlier, in Tsipiana Ilia, twenty-year-old Christina saw for the first time the man she was to marry—he in the living room with her father, she in the kitchen. Two young women from different parts of Greece “meet” through the constant struggle of women of that era, from arranged marriage to motherhood.

Istorima is the largest project for recording and preserving oral histories in Greece. More than 1,000 young researchers seek out narrators, listen, collect, and safeguard stories from across the country: stories of place, stories of love, stories that shaped or defined us—contemporary or historical. Stories not recorded in history books and that could otherwise be lost over time. The project was founded by journalist Sofia Papaioannou.
